Cardinal Timothy Dolan

Timothy Dolan was named Archbishop of New York by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009 and appointed by him to the College of Cardinals in 2012.

He had served as Archbishop of Milwaukee, appointed by Pope Saint John Paul II since 2002.

Timothy Dolan born in 1950 in Ballwin, Missouri. His education began at Holy Infant Parish in Missouri, and continued through the high school and college seminaries in Saint Louis. He completed his priestly formation at the Pontifical North American College in Rome earning a degree in Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.  

Ordained to the priesthood in Saint Louis in 1976, he served as an associate pastor until 1979 when he went to The Catholic University of America for a doctorate in American Church History. 

Cardinal Dolan served in parish ministry in St. Louis from 1983-87, and then was appointed to a five-year term as secretary to the Apostolic Nuncio in Washington, D.C. In 1992, he was appointed vice-rector and professor of Church History at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, as well as an adjunct professor of theology at Saint Louis University.  

From 1994-2001, he was rector of the Pontifical North American College in Rome.  He also served as a visiting professor of Church History at the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. In 2001 he was named the Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis by Pope Saint John Paul II.

Cardinal Dolan served as chairman of Catholic Relief Services, and was a member of the Board of Trustees of The Catholic University of America. He is also a member of the Vatican Offices of Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization, the Congregation for Eastern Churches, and the Congregation of Catholic Education.
