View the President's Schedule

Day started at 10 A.M. a half hour staff go around. A little talk about Bork & my broadcast yesterday. The Dem. response Sen. Terry Sanford was the height of demagoguery. We also talked about offices to be filled—Sec. of Labor etc. Suggestion was made that we should look for women & Hispanics etc.

Then N.S.C. briefing—talk of Budget problems for defense & our Central American strategy. At 11 A.M. a meeting with Sen. Steering Committee—these are Repubs. of my persuasion who have banded together. It was a good meeting & we covered a number of legislative problems. I assured them I would not soften my requirements for a Supreme Ct. Justice to please the lynch mob.

After lunch a meeting with Geo. S. to see him off to the Middle East & on to Moscow. Frank follows & joins him next week. Some desk time—then a meeting with Roy Brewer. He has copious documentation of the domestic communist scene.

Some personnelle time with Bob Tuttle then Admin time. First was a proclamation signing with 50 motorcycle & squad car officers who have had experiences with seatbelts—that saved them. My proclamation was to encourage use of belts. Then new commander of V.F.W. [Veterans of Foreign Wars—Earl Stock]. Then the widow, daughter & grand children of my fraternity brother Wiggie Eihausen—Eureka College. A long session of tapings—2 of them with Nancy then upstairs to a very early dinner & over to the Marriott Hotel to address the Annual Governors Club dinner—a fund raiser for Repub. State elections. Home at 8 P.M.
