The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor awarded in the United States of America. Only 3,500 military personnel have received this award since it was established during the Civil War, and there are fewer than 100 recipients living today.
Three of these Medal of Honor Recipients will be in the Reagan Library Museum Store at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 to sign copies of Medal of Honor: Portraits of Valor Beyond the Call of Duty. Books must be purchased through the Reagan Library Museum Store to receive signature.
The three recipients are:
- Sammy Davis – US Army Sergeant First Class Sammy Davis was awarded the MOH on November 19, 1968 for his heroic actions in Vietnam on November 18, 1967. The image of him receiving the award appeared in the movie Forrest Gump (with Tom Hanks’s head substituted for Davis’s; Gump’s fictional MOH citation was loosely based on Davis’s real one).
- Jim McCloughan – US Army Combat Medic Jim McCloughan was awarded the MOH by President Trump on July 30, 2017, 48 years after he was credited for saving the lives of 10 members of his company over two days of battle at the attack of Nui Yon Hill in May 1969.
- Hiroshi Miyamura – US Army Corporal Hiroshi Miyamura was awarded the MOH on October 27, 1953. His Medal of Honor award was classified by the US Army for 28 months as he was being held by North Koreans as a Prisoner of War.
