Carlos cites three characteristics by which he chooses to lead and serve to make a powerful, positive impact in his school, community, state, and nation: persistence, passion, and advocacy. These descriptions could not be more accurate of Carlos’ achievements to date. For more than three years, Carlos has fought to pass a smoke-free ordinance in his town, a statewide bill to raise the legal age to purchase tobacco products, and tougher tobacco regulations nationally. Because he passionately believes in these causes, Carlos stands tall for them, despite not being taken seriously for his age. This journey has resulted in a number of community awareness and service efforts, as well as meetings with local, state, and national officials, and recently, he was named the 2017 National Youth Advocate of the Year for the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Beyond this tremendous work, Carlos served as president of the student council and president of SADD. Carlos hails from Ingleside, Texas, and will attend Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi in the fall.
