The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute (RRPFI) is the nonprofit organization created by President Reagan himself and specifically charged by him with continuing his legacy and sharing his principles - individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy and national pride. The Foundation is a non-partisan organization which sustains the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, CA, the Reagan Center for Public Affairs, the Presidential Learning Center, The Air Force One Pavilion and the award-winning Discovery Center, as well as the Reagan Institute, which carries out the Foundation’s work in Washington, D.C.  The Reagan Library houses over 55 million pages of Gubernatorial, Presidential and personal papers and over 60,000 gifts and artifacts chronicling the lives of Ronald and Nancy Reagan. It also serves as the final resting place of America’s 40th President and his First Lady.

Position Available

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute is seeking a Director of Development (DoD).  Reporting to the Chief Development Officer (CDO), the DoD will be responsible for developing and implementing a strategic development plan to substantially increase major and planned gifts from individuals as well as corporate and foundation revenue.

This position would ideally be based in or willing to relocate to Southern California.  Exceptional candidates working from a virtual office elsewhere in the country will also be considered, but must be willing to travel regularly.

Duties and Responsibilities

In addition to other duties that may be assigned in the future, the DoD will have the following responsibilities:

Major and Planned Gifts (60%):

  • Working closely with the CDO, developing, implementing, and managing on an ongoing basis a proactive and effective major gifts program including all activities relating to the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individual major and planned gift prospects.
  • Personally managing a significant portfolio (approximately 125-150) of major and planned gift prospects of $25,000 or more; closing 15 gifts annually, 3-4 per quarter with an emphasis on cash gifts.
  • Maintaining appropriate donor tracking and activity monitoring systems to ensure that cultivation and solicitation strategies are successfully implemented and goals are met.
  • Developing a strategy and implementation program to expand significantly the prospect pool utilizing effective donor identification and acquisition techniques.
  • Participating in bi-weekly prospect review meetings and brief CDO on prospect development
  • Developing a strategy and implementation program to expand significantly the prospect pool utilizing effective donor identification and acquisition techniques.

Corporate and Foundation Relations (30%):

  • Designing, implementing and managing a program to identify, cultivate and solicit corporate and foundation relationships at both a local and national level, including corporate membership programs in both California and Washington, DC.
  • Identifying emerging business leaders and industry trends with an emphasis on developing long-term high-value corporate alliances and philanthropic support.
  • Identifying prospects for foundation support and trends in foundation giving that are in alignment with RRPFI’s mission and programs.
  • Significantly increasing philanthropic support from corporations and foundations.
  • Personally building and managing a portfolio (approximately 30-60) corporate and foundation prospects of $25,000 or more; closing 10 gifts annually, 2-3 per quarter.
  • Working cooperatively with others in RRPFI to develop and articulate a compelling and consistent case for corporate support.
  • Managing the solicitation, grant writing and stewardship process for corporations and foundations.
  • Represent the RRPFI at on-site and off-site events with donors, prospective donors, corporate and foundation representatives.

General (10%):

  • Supporting events and other programs and activities of the Board, ED and CDO relating to the mission and activities of the Library and Foundation.
  • Supporting the Board, ED and CDO in the ongoing implementation of the Foundation’s campaigns.
  • Regularly attending and participating in bi-weekly “all-staff” meetings.
  • Assuming responsibility for reaching assigned fundraising and activity goals (during specific campaign periods both the dollar amount and number of gifts will be adjusted to obtain the fundraising goal established by the Board).
  • Participating in the preparation of and attending the Reagan National Defense Forum, held annually at the end of November/beginning of December at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California.


  • Minimum of 7 years of demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating and soliciting major individual, corporate and foundation gifts in a significant non-profit organization
  • Philosophical alignment with and passion for the principles Reagan stood for, including individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy and national pride
  • Experience building relationships with conservative donors a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership ability to create and nurture long-term relationships with donors and prospects and to develop appropriate cultivation and solicitation strategies for each individual
  • Ability to articulate the case for support and to interact with Board members, donors and prospects at the highest level
  • Ability and willingness to travel 30 percent of time
  • Bachelor’s degree required
