The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute is the nonprofit organization created by President Reagan himself and specifically charged by him with continuing his legacy and sharing his principles - individual liberty, economic opportunity, global democracy and national pride. The Foundation is a non-partisan organization which sustains the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley, CA, the Reagan  Center for Public Affairs, the Presidential Learning Center, The Air Force One Pavilion and the award-winning Discovery Center, as well as the Reagan Institute, which carries out the Foundation’s work in Washington, DC.  The Reagan Library houses over 60 million pages of Gubernatorial, Presidential and personal papers, over 1.6 million photographs, a half million feet of motion picture film, 25,000 audio recordings, 22,000 video recordings, and over 83,000 objects chronicling the lives of Ronald and Nancy Reagan.  It also serves as the final resting place of America’s 40th President and his First Lady. www.reaganfoundation.org  

Job Description

The Ronald Reagan Institute in Washington, DC, seeks a full-time Policy Assistant for the Center for Freedom and Democracy and Center for Peace Through Strength to perform a wide variety of functions in support of the programming on national security and foreign policy.  These activities include: support program design and development, research and planning, development/fundraising support, marketing, and general office duties.  We are looking for a driven and determined individual with strong organizational and communication skills to help build and sustain a number of programs, projects, publications, and convenings. The ideal candidate for this position will be a strong communicator and excellent writer who is organized, detail-oriented, and takes initiative. Experience providing administrative and program support is a plus.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Policy Assistant will be expected to perform the following specific duties and responsibilities related to this position and any duties hereafter assigned:

  • Policy Research and Program Development
    • Assist the Policy Director with extensive research and support for the Center for Freedom and Democracy and Center for Peace Through Strength, including the Westminster 2.0 Working Group and the National Security Task Force, which convene leading policymakers and thought leaders to make recommendations on current foreign and defense policy challenges.
    • Provide research and analytical support to the Policy Director, to include drafting memos and written remarks, preparing internal and external presentations, and list building.
    • Support both large and small events of the two Centers—such as the Reagan National Defense Forum, the Reagan Institute Strategy Group, and policy roundtables—including: managing invitation processes, liaising with internal teams and external partners, and assisting with logistics and general event support, in coordination with the Policy Director and Director of Programs and Operations.
    • Assist with outreach to Members of Congress and key Capitol Hill staff to support educational initiatives of the two Centers.
    • Cultivate and sustain relationships with important foreign and defense policy institutes and key stakeholders.
    • Collaborate with Development staff in Washington, DC as well as in California to manage donors’ needs, including event invitations, proposals, and reports.
    • Support broader Institute events, sometimes in the evenings, on weekends, and holidays.
  • Correspondence & CommunicationUL
    • Assist with digital and written correspondence and communications efforts, such as event invitations, email campaigns, press releases, publications, and announcements.
    • Providing proofreading support on external correspondence and event materials.
    • Draft social media content related to foreign and defense policy and the work of the two Centers.
    • Work with IT team to make timely updates reflecting both Center’s programming on the Institute’s website.
    • Liaise with California staff to manage a variety of projects related to graphic design for external products of the Centers, such as reports, infographics, and proposals.
    • Prepare background briefs for meetings.                                                                                                  
  • General Office
    • Professional phone correspondence ranging from request for information, event RSVPs, event management, general inquiries, and more.
    • Manage administrative systems of the two Centers, including scanning, printing, photocopying, filing, mailings, assembling event materials, etc.
  •  Digital Office
      • Basic computer support and proficiency to troubleshoot and problem solve autonomously.
      • Organize digital files from cloud platforms to shared drives.
      • With training, have basic literacy of RRPFI customer relationship management (CRM) system to effectively track correspondence and engagement.
      • Basic literacy of digital equipment including use of digital camera for photography and video purposes, setup of A/V and production equipment setup (projectors, HDMI to TV, film, video).


  • Passion for foreign and defense policy
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • Two to three years of work experience is a plus

Reporting Relationships

This position will report to the Policy Director and will work closely with the Reagan Institute team (particularly the Director of Programs and Operations) as well as staff in California.

Work Environment/Physical Demands
