Annual Veterans Day Commemoration
Wednesday, November 11, 2015
Outdoor Activities: 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Program: 11:00 a.m.
Book Signing:  11:45 a.m.

To honor the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library will be hosting its annual Veterans Day Event on Wednesday, November 11.   The day’s activities include a live musical entertainment, a civil war encampment, a military vehicle display and a program honoring all branches of our military.

The program, which begins at 11:00 a.m., includes an honor guard and remarks by retired U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne.  Staff Sergeant Mills is a wounded warrior, motivational speaker, and international advocate for veterans and amputees. He is one of only five servicemen from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan ever to survive his injuries as a quadruple amputee. He started the Travis Mills Foundation, which benefits and assists wounded and injured veterans, www.travismills.org.  Following the program, Staff Sergeant Mills will be signing his brand new book Tough as They Come: A Memoir (release date November 3, 2015).  Books must be purchased in the Reagan Library Museum Store to receive signature.

Outdoor events and the program are free to attend, however reservations are recommended to attend the program. Reserve seats and to pre-purchase books, please visit register here.  Museum admission rates apply to visit the Reagan Museum and Air Force One Pavilion, including our special exhibit, Football! The Exhibition.  Veterans with valid ID will receive free admission to the Museum on November 11.  Active military members with valid ID are always free.

More information on Tough as They Come:
During his three combat-filled tours of duty in Afghanistan, former college sports star and skilled paratrooper U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills never once backed down from the hardest challenges that came his way. The big, likable guy literally woke up every morning proudly singing the 82nd Airborne song to encourage and motivate the men he led.  But late one afternoon in April 2012 while Travis and his men were on a routine mission near a remote village in southern Afghanistan, the unthinkable happened. While patrolling for improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the minesweeper missed one IED, and Travis Mills’s world changed forever.

In this vivid account of Travis’s heroic fight for survival, he recalls the action-packed and challenging days of his earlier tours of duty with the legendary 82nd Airborne Division, the agony of encountering a hidden bomb while on patrol with his men, and his odds-defying physical and spiritual struggle afterward to come back from severe quadruple-amputee injuries and rebuild his life.  This searing and unforgettable true story will inspire, encourage, challenge, and motivate you forward. It shows how resilient the human spirit is, how unbreakable the will is when pressed with difficult demands, and how triumphant a person can be when tasked with the seemingly impossible. “Every day is a challenge,” Travis says, “but every challenge can be overcome. I’m not wounded anymore. If you’re wounded, then you’re still focused on your injury. I’m just a man with scars living life to the fullest and best I know how.”
