Civic Engagement through Writing

The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation in partnership with the Cal State Northridge Writing Project cordially invites you to participate in Civic Engagement through Writing.

A one day professional development session for teachers of civics, government, and U.S. History at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum. Saturday, January 21st, 2012 from 9:00 AM -3:30 PM

President Reagan was known as “The Great Communicator,” and was a champion of civic engagement, saying “We must remember that an active and informed citizenry is not just a right; it is an obligation.” This session examines the links between written communication and civic engagement through the lens of primary source materials and sessions on integrating content-area writing into social studies instruction. Teachers will receive specific literacy strategies designed to develop literacy skills in the social studies classroom.
This event is offered at no cost to educators.
If you would like a box lunch, the cost is $12.

Participants will receive:

  • A copy of “Unit 1: Civics and Citizenship,” published by the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center.
  • Standards aligned, classroom-- ready materials.
  • Strategies for integrating writing into Civics and Social Studies instruction
  • Lunch (vegetarian option available)
  • Admission to the museum
  • Exclusive access to an interactive Discovery Center Experience
  • The opportunity to earn 1 CEU from Cal State Northridge (Optional Credit for $90 fee.)
  • Optional self-guided tour of the Museum

In 1983, President Ronald Reagan spoke before the Annual Convention of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. He said, “The price of freedom is high, but never more costly than the loss of freedom. And freedom, we must always remember, is never more than one generation away from extinction. Each generation must do whatever is necessary to preserve it and pass it on to the next, or it will be lost forever.”

Few Americans have sacrificed as much to preserve our freedom as the recipients of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor. In this Speaker Series for Students event, a panel of four Medal of Honor recipients will share their amazing stories of bravery and sacrifice and explore the concepts of Courage, Commitment, Sacrifice, Patriotism, Integrity and Citizenship. Following the panel discussion, students in the audience will have a chance to pose questions and share their thoughts with these heroes.

Seating for this event is limited, and there will be a lottery to award seats.*

Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice Webcast Registration

On February 24, 2012, from 10:00 AM – 11:15 AM, you can join thousands of teachers and students across the country by tuning in for a live webcast of Medal of Honor: Lessons of Personal Bravery and Self-Sacrifice, part of the acclaimed Speaker Series for Students at the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation. This remarkable panel will feature four of America’s greatest heroes and role models discussing how their stories of bravery act as a call to service in general. Classrooms from across the country can submit questions online to:

  • Walter Ehlers (World War II): Received the Medal of Honor for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 9-10 June 1944, near Goville, France.
  • Patrick Brady (Vietnam): While serving in the Republic of Vietnam, Brady commanded a UH-1H ambulance helicopter, volunteered to rescue wounded men from a site in enemy held territory which was reported to be heavily defended and to be blanketed by fog.
  • Bruce Crandall (Vietnam): On 14 November 1965 Major Crandall completed a total of 22 flights, most under intense enemy fire, retiring from the battlefield only after all possible service had been rendered to the Infantry battalion. His actions provided critical resupply of ammunition and evacuation of the wounded.
  • Salvatore Giunta (Afghanistan): Specialist Giunta's unwavering courage, selflessness, and decisive leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon's ability to defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American soldier from the enemy.

Primary Sources in the Elementary Classroom

9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

The Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center is partnering with The History Project and The Library of Congress to sponsor a wonderful FREE workshop for K-6 teachers to learn strategies for utilizing primary source materials in the classroom. The workshop will be held at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and will feature model lessons and materials from the Library of Congress and the Walter and Leonore Annenberg Presidential Learning Center at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation.

The Library of Congress houses a treasure trove of primary source materials to engage young learners in historical inquiry and historical thinking.  This 1-day workshop for K-6 teachers will guide participants through the process of finding and utilizing these unique resources.  Participants are eligible for a $50 stipend upon satisfactory development of a lesson using the resources.

  • One semester unit of continuing education credit will be available for $45.
  • Lunch will be provided. Please indicate if you prefer a vegetarian meal when registering.
  • Participants must bring a wireless-capable laptop to the workshop.
