Annual Veterans Day Event

Please join us for our Annual Veterans Day Celebration at The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. This celebration is a tribute to our United States Veterans. All branches of military will be honored. All Veterans Day activities are free to attend. In addition, regular Museum Veterans and all active military members with a valid military ID will be admitted at no charge into the Museum and Air Force One Pavilion on Wednesday, November 11. Regular Museum admission rates apply for all other visitors. For more information, please call 800-410-8354.

Also, on November 11, 2009, For the Troops will be at the Reagan Library collecting donations for U.S. Soldiers. As some of these shipments may go overseas, please make certain that your donated item is unwrapped and in its original packaging. Items currently requested by soldiers include: packets of trail mix, peanuts, gum, hard candy and beef jerky; snacks that are not heat sensitive and will not melt in hot temperatures; individual packets of lemonade or Crystal Light for water bottles; CDs and DVDs; used video games; AA batteries; stationery; and pre-paid phone cards. Only miniature hygiene items will be accepted.

10:30 am - C-17 Flyover
The 10:30 am flyover on Veterans Day is the massive Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, America's most versatile airlift aircraft. This aircraft is operated by the 452nd Air Mobility Wing at historic March Field, in Riverside California. It is being flown by an Air Force Reserve aircrew from the 729th Airlift Squadron, also based at March Field.

10:45 am – Musical Prelude:
Sequoia Middle School Choir, under the direction of Rebecca Davey, will be accompanied by the 562nd Air Force Band Brass Quintet

11:00 am - Program begins:

  • Color Guard, led by LCDR Ernest S. Cowell
  • Remarks by Colonel Paul J. Hargrove, 146th Airlift Wing, National Guard Port Hueneme: Reagan Library’s Own American Hero: U.S. Air Force Colonel Clyde East
  • Remarks by Gary Roush, President of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association
  • Remarks by Patrick Fries, Producer, “In the Shadow of the Blade”

12:30 pm - Huey Helicopter landing on the Reagan Library’s South Lawn Replica

12:45 pm Flyover
The 12:45 pm flyover will be two Black Hawk UH-60's. They are from the California Army National Guard based in Los Alamitos, CA.

2:00 pm - Free film showing of 'In the Shadow of the Blade'
The emotion packed documentary In The Shadow of The Blade follows the 10,000-mile journey of a battle-scarred UH-1 "Huey" helicopter into America's backyards to hear the untold stories of Vietnam War veterans and families who waited for them to come home. Winner, “Best in Show”, Worldfest Houston 2004; Winner, “President’s Award”, Vietnam Veterans of America, 2004.

Vietnam War Veteran, Leonard Spydell, will introduce the production team from Arrowhead Film and Video who were behind this incredible effort that reveals truth about the human spirit and the price we pay for liberty.
